Two monumental stone hands, one representing the community, the other representing the Nia Center, come together to create Don Lawler and Meg White's massive Opportunity Portal. The Nia Center, which takes its name from the Swahili word 'nia' meaning purpose, provides assistance with employment, small business development, and transportation. It is located at 2900 West Broadway.

Sculptors Lawler and White often work together and collaborated to create this sculpture. Don Lawler studied fine arts at Centre College, and later apprenticed with Louisville sculptors Barney Bright and Paul Fields. Meg White is a self—taught sculptor from New Albany, Indiana, who began stone carving in 1991 in Lawler's studio. The two artists share a studio in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. (KG)
