Barney Bright's fanciful River Horse fountain was commissioned in 1973 by the City of Louisville for what was then Federal Plaza. It is now located in Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the corner of Sixth and Chestnut Streets.

Barney Bright (1927—1997) was born in Shelbyville, Kentucky. After attending Davidson College in North Carolina and serving in the Navy during World War II, he came to Louisville where he attended the University of Louisville and the Art Center School. In 1953, he purchased a studio on Frankfort Avenue which he would later convert into a bronze foundry. The Bright Foundry, now located on East Washington Street, is still operated by Bright's son Jep. It has been the training ground for a generation of artists, including Ed Hamilton, Raymond Graf, Meg White and Bob Lockhart. (KG)
