The Patriots Peace Memorial was erected in 2002 to honor men and women in military service fallen in the line of duty under conditions other than those of declared hostile action. The memorial consists of a rectangular structure composed of bricks on raised pillars. The structure is open to the elements with a stepped dais in its interior. A relief of the American flag is etched on the memorial's north wall.

The memorial, designed by architect David Quillin, is interactive and ever changing. Every time a service member is added to the memorial, a stone brick is removed from the structure and replaced with a glass brick etched with their name, allowing light to pierce the walls. An annual enshrinement ceremony is held each year at noon on Memorial Day.

The memorial is located at 3742 River Road east of downtown Louisville, next to Thurman—Hutchins Park. For more information visit www.patriotspeacememorial.org. (KG)
