The Fire Fighter's Flame Memorial located outside of Louisville Fire Department Headquarters at 1135 West Jefferson Street was created by Kentucky artist Garry Bibbs to commemorate Louisville firefighters fallen in the line of duty. The stainless steel sculpture consists of an abstract flame leaping from a stone base as a hose and ladder swirl about it in an attempt to control the blaze. The memorial was completed with contributions made by Mayor Abramson and the Board of Aldermen, Louisville Division of Fire, Professional Fire Fighters Local #345, and the Black Progressive Fire Fighters Association.

Garry Bibbs (b. 1960) has an MFA from the University of Kentucky and did his postdoctoral work at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a Ford Foundation Fellow with the internationally renowned sculptor Richard Hunt. He is an Associate Professor of Sculpture at the University of Kentucky. He is known not only for his large scale outdoor sculptures, but also for his colorful monoprints. (KG)
