This mural, located in the exit lobby of the Louisville Department of Corrections at 400 South Sixth Street, was the result of a partnership between the Department of Corrections and the Kentucky Foundation for Women to strengthen families affected by incarceration. The artists commissioned to create the work, visual artist Joyce Ogden and photographer Mary Yates, worked with more than one hundred community members including jail staff, incarcerated persons and their loved ones to identify themes and images that would evoke the importance of family, hope and new beginnings. The mural itself, which is composed of hand—made clay tiles, was completed with the help of over 300 volunteers. (KG)
